"Wenger to Switch Attention to €15m Swiss Starlet if Hazard Rejects Arsenal"

Arsenal are could renew their interest in FC Basel star Xherdan Shaqiri as the chance to sign Eden Hazard appears to be diminishing.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has identified Lille attacker Hazard as his first-choice long-term replacement for the departed Cesc Fabregas but competition for the Belgian is fierce.

As well as Premier League rivals Chelsea and Manchester City, it is thought Hazard is attracting the interest of Spanish giants Real Madrid, with news emerging that a pre-contract deal had been agreed.

Although Real have denied a deal is in place, Wenger has been forced to identify new options should Hazard opt for a move elsewhere.


Shaqiri, also thought to be a target of Tottenham, has emerged as one of the most exciting talents in Europe following his exploits for both club and country.

In September, he hit a hat-trick for Switzerland against Bulgaria in a Euro 2012 qualifier and has continued his fine club form from last season.

The 20-year-old midfielder has admitted he is flattered by the interest being shown in him, but he is remaining focussed on success with Basle.

"I'm in good form and obviously I am pleased that so many clubs have noticed me," Shaqiri said. "But I am just thinking about helping my team win the championship in my country and qualify for the next round of the Champions League."

If Wenger decides to follow up his interest with a bid, he will need to offer in excess of €15m, which would prove much cheaper business than the €40m Lille are demanding for Hazard.
